Miami New Times: Grand Illusion

A-Seemingly-Open-Door-01

Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova infuses a thin sliver of light with subtle meaning in his sly installation. It’s easy to miss, and several people on a recent visit unwittingly walked by it.

The aptly titled A Seemingly Open Door is just that. Rodriguez-Casanova installed a pristine white door in a museum wall that gives the impression the door is cracked open to an unseen space bathed in blinding light that bleeds into the gallery. Some visitors who discovered it felt compelled to give the doorknob a tug to see what lay on the other side. They were left hanging when the door wouldn’t budge. The piece helps underscore the show’s concept that for some of these artists, their works are points of departure rather than mere destinations.

Fortunate Objects at CIFO on Vernissage TV

Fortunate Objects: Selections from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection is an exhibition showcasing contemporary art inspired by everyday objects. It features works by artists such as Ai Weiwei, Damien Hirst and José Antonio Hernández-Diez. Fortunate Objects is structured around three main themes: the appropriated object, the surrogate object, and the object utilized. “Fortunate Objects proposes a playful, imaginative, curious and unexpected approach to objects used in daily life,” said Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, Chief Curator of the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) and the curator for the exhibition. “This show celebrates and investigates the nature of the objects surrounding us, and in doing so, encourages us to reexamine our environment and ourselves.” Miami, Florida, December 14, 2007.

Part 2 of the interview with the chief curator of the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), Cecilia Fajardo Hill. In the second part of the conversation Cecilia Fajardo Hill talks about the relevance of Art Basel Miami Beach for Miami, the reasons for Miami to florish artistically, the distinctions between the several private collections in Miami, and the history and focus of CIFO. Miami, Florida, December 14, 2007.
